The convergence of a stylized floral spray and a cypress tree: a Zoroastrian symbol of life and eternity. The design originated in the Safavid Dynasty of the Persia Empire (from 1501 to 1736) and has since been used widely in Persian and Iranian textiles.

Coffee + Place cards

Leaf-shaped placement cards stuck in dark roasted coffee beans.

Persian Cuisine

I was browsing through the Gourmet website and I came along a recipe for Khashk-e-bademjan and I could hardly believe it! I absolutely love that Persian culture is becoming so integrated into mainstream American media. The thought of a Sally-Sue cooking kashk-e-bademjoon in her kitchen makes me so happy! It amazes me how much we have progressed as a people.

I also found this piece written by Firoozeh Dumas to be touching and very true. She describes in detail the hectic and intricate preparation before a mehmooni. Made me smile.

Did you meet and fall in love in Seattle?

I haven't worked with many Persian/Iranian couples who have chosen to send out save-the-date notices, however, I think they are especially great for larger weddings. The earlier people are notified of weddings (or any event for that matter) the more likely they will prioritize to attend. I found these cute Space Needle save-the-dates. They would be absolutely perfect for a Seattle couple. found via wedding paper divas

Outdoor Aghd Ceremony

Outdoor aghd ceremonies seem to be quite popular right now. Photographers enjoy working with natural light and the backdrop is almost always guaranteed to be beautiful.

The above seating arrangement would be perfect for an outdoor aghd ceremony. All the guests would have a great view of the bride and groom and the intricately-designed sofreh.

Norooz Eggs

One of my favorite parts of Norooz is decorating eggs! Here are some inspiring ideas for your sofreh hafseen this year:

has everyone started their sabzeh for the Norooz?

I have decided that I prefer growing wheat rather than lentils for my sofreh sabzeh. The final product seems so much more green and lush. That is, of course, if it grows at all. Sadly, in the past, I have had several sofreh haftseens that have been adorned with a plate of wet sprouting lentils rather than anything green and lush. Luckily, I have a better idea of how to grow the Norooz sabzeh now. Thank goodness. And every year, right before sizdeh bedar, I get a little sad when I realize I have to bid farewell to my little green friend.

It's recommended that you set your sabzeh about 2 weeks prior to Norooz. So, consider yourself warned. No one likes a bald sabzeh on the sofreh haftseen. More importantly, I hope you are able to take in all the joy in these moments. This is such a wonderful time of the year.
